When you hire a lawyer to work on your case, I think it is important that
you hire someone with notable experience. You don't want a new lawyer
handling a case that could have a lasting impact on your future. Instead,
you should hire someone with
intimate knowledge of trial law who can approach your case with complete confidence.
Education and Previous Law Experience
Prior to establishing Hughes Law, PLLC, I worked at the following law firms:
- Matovich, Keller and Murphy, P.C., Billings, Montana
- Hedger, Friend, P.L.L.C., Billings, Montana
- United States Attorney's Office, Missoula, Montana
While working for these firms, I argued cases before the Ninth Circuit
Court of Appeals. I also had the opportunity to brief numerous appeals
to the Montana Supreme Court.
Other Legal Experience and Volunteer Work
Today, I am primarily a litigation attorney at Hughes Law, PLLC, though
I do contract title opinions for another law firm. In the past, I have served as
outside counsel for the BNSF Railway, a busy litigation practice which defends against the Federal Employer
Liability claims. I have been involved in at least one multi-day jury
trial at with the BNSF Railway each year.
I also work as a
Billings Municipal Court Judge Pro Tem, where I preside over arraignments, changes of plea, petitions for orders
of protection, and misdemeanor trials. I also use my legal skills to help
those in need in my community. I am a volunteer at the Yellowstone CASA
as a Court Appointed Special Advocate. At this organization, I represent
abused and neglected children and work with social workers, teachers,
parents, and others involved in the children's lives to help protect
the young ones. I prepare reports of the court and present live testimony
to help these children get the assistance they need.
Rare Combination of Qualifications
My entire family has worked on the railroads. I have family members that
have worked as construction workers and others who are conductors. I know
an extensive amount about railroad law, so I am very adept at handling
these cases. I also have a unique knowledge of oil, gas and mineral rights
and often review contracts that are used in these industries.
My experience in the field of oil and gas involves examining title and
advising clients about mineral and property ownership, preparing curative
documents, and pursuing other quiet title remedies. I also have practice
researching and interpreting operating agreements to ensure compliance
or determine whether a breach of the agreement has occurred.
If you need assistance in a personal injury, railroad, or oil, gas and
mineral rights case, I can help. Don't hesitate to call
